Project Overview: High School Fundraiser Flyer Redesign
This project was completed as part of my BA in Graphic Design and Media Arts, with a concentration in Web Design curriculum. It demonstrates my ability to meet specific project briefs, adhere to deadlines, and apply design theory to simulated or real-world client scenarios.
Role: Graphic Designer
Client: Central Dauphin High School of Technology
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Typography, Vector Illustration
The Challenge
The Education Department needed to raise funds for new transport vans via a community car wash. The original promotional material was a high-contrast, black-and-white flyer that, while functional, lacked the "stopping power" needed to grab attention in a crowded hallway or on a community bulletin board. The goal was to inject energy, color, and a modern aesthetic to drive higher attendance.
The Evolution: From Static to Dynamic
This redesign focused on moving away from a traditional "clip-art" feel toward a cohesive, professional-grade marketing asset.
Initial Iteration (Functional Foundation): The first version utilized a classic high-contrast palette. While the information was clear, the balance was bottom-heavy, and the vintage car illustration—though stylish—didn't quite communicate the fast, sudsy energy of a modern car wash.
Final Iteration (The Transformation): In the final version, I shifted the entire visual strategy. I introduced a warm, inviting color palette of golden yellows and muted sudsy tones to make the flyer feel more approachable and "sunny."
Key Technical Achievements
Visual Hierarchy & Impact: I completely overhauled the "Car Wash" header, using a bold, bubbly typeface that mimics the look of soap suds. By overlapping the text and letting it bleed slightly off the top, the design feels more expansive and energetic.
Modern Vector Illustration: I replaced the vintage car with a one that would evoke nostalgia for current students.
Strategic Use of Graphics: Added "bubble" and "sparkle" vector elements to create a sense of movement. This reinforces the "clean" outcome of the service.
Information Architecture: I utilized a "Price Tag" graphic for the $5 fee, making the most important value proposition immediately scannable. I also integrated a QR code to bridge the gap between physical print and digital interaction, ensuring donors could easily find more info.
The Result
The final redesign transformed a basic announcement into a compelling event brand. By utilizing better whitespace, a modern color story, and intentional iconography, the flyer successfully communicates professionalism and community spirit, making it much more likely to convert passersby into supporters.
