Project Overview: Dolly Parton Typography Redesign

This project was completed as part of my BA in Graphic Design and Media Arts, with a concentration in Web Design curriculum. It demonstrates my ability to meet specific project briefs, adhere to deadlines, and apply design theory to simulated or real-world client scenarios.

Role: Graphic Designer

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Typography Design

Focus: Iterative Design & Custom Vector Illustration

The Challenge

The goal was to take a meaningful quote—"If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours"—and transform it from a basic typographic layout into a visually cohesive brand asset. The challenge lay in moving beyond standard fonts to create a custom visual language that reflected the personality and "Country Queen" roots of Dolly Parton.

The Evolution: Beginning vs. End of Course

This project serves as a benchmark of my design progression throughout the term, transitioning from foundational layout principles to advanced vector manipulation.

  • Iteration 1 (The Foundation): The initial black-and-white design focused purely on hierarchy and font pairing. It established the core message but lacked a unique "voice" or environmental context.

  • Final Iteration (The Transformation): By the end of the course, I revisited the design with a deeper toolkit. I introduced a warm, western-inspired color palette and integrated illustrative elements to give the quote a sense of place.

Key Technical Achievements
  • Custom Vector Brushwork: To lean into the western theme, I designed a custom rope lasso stroke. This required creating a seamless vector pattern that maintains its texture and "twisted" appearance even when applied to complex, curving paths.

  • Thematic Typography: I replaced the standard sans-serif with a bold, slab-serif display font for "SMILE," adding a decorative "Western" feel that anchors the composition.

  • Organic Composition: I used the rope elements to frame the text, creating a heart shape in the upper right and fluid, circular patterns that guide the viewer’s eye through the quote.

  • Color Theory: Shifted from high-contrast black and white to a sophisticated palette of dusty rose, deep mahogany, and cream, evoking a vintage, rustic aesthetic.

The Result

The final piece is more than just a quote; it’s a stylized meme redesign that demonstrates a mastery of Illustrator’s advanced brush tools and a matured eye for thematic consistency. It shows my ability to take a simple brief and elevate it into a professional-grade graphic.
