Project Overview: Dual Book Jacket Design & Illustration

This project was completed as part of my BA in Graphic Design and Media Arts, with a concentration in Web Design curriculum. It demonstrates my ability to meet specific project briefs, adhere to deadlines, and apply design theory to simulated or real-world client scenarios.

Role: Illustrator & Graphic Designer

Tools: Adobe Illustrator (Vector Art), InDesign (Layout), Adobe Photoshop (3D Mockups)

Deliverables: Two custom-illustrated dust jackets with realistic

The Challenge

The goal was to design two distinct book covers that demonstrate a mastery of genre-specific aesthetics while maintaining high standards of technical layout. The project required the creation of original vector illustrations and the application of professional publishing standards, including spine measurements, flap copy, and barcode integration.

Design Strategy & Execution

I approached this project by exploring two different visual directions to prove my range as a designer and illustrator.

  • Sunset Edition (Warm & Narrative): This design focuses on a rich, warm color palette. I used organic shapes and a layered illustration style to create a sense of depth and storytelling. The typography is integrated into the environment of the illustration to ensure a cohesive "wrap-around" feel from the front cover to the spine.

  • Minimalist Waves (Clean & Modern): In contrast, the blue wave design utilizes a minimalist, geometric approach. This edition demonstrates my ability to communicate a mood through simplicity, using clean lines and a restricted palette to create a high-end, contemporary literary aesthetic.

Key Technical Achievements
  • Original Vector Illustration: Every element—from the flowing waves to the textured sunset gradients—was hand-drawn in Illustrator, ensuring the artwork is infinitely scalable without loss of quality.

  • Typography & Hierarchy: I established a clear visual hierarchy by balancing bold, decorative titles with readable, clean serif fonts for the author's name and back-cover blurbs. I paid close attention to the "shelf-presence" of the spine, ensuring the title remains the focal point.

  • Professional Layout Standards: Both jackets include standard publishing elements:

    • Front/Back Flaps: Designed with proper margins for author bios and plot summaries.

    • Spine Alignment: Precise calculation for a standard 1-inch book thickness.

    • Production Details: Proper placement of the ISBN barcode and publisher logos.

  • Photoshop Compositing: To bring the designs to life, I created realistic 3D mockups in Photoshop. By using smart objects and displacement maps, I simulated how the paper would wrap around a physical book, including natural highlights and shadows to give the client a "real-world" preview of the final product.

The Result

The final portfolio piece showcases a "full-circle" design process—from a blank canvas and custom illustration to a professional, market-ready product. It highlights my dual strengths as both a creative artist and a technically-minded designer capable of handling complex print layouts.
