Orca-strated Chaos – Brand Identity & Merchandise Design
Branding, Illustrations and Icons

Overview
Orca-strated Chaos is a Pacific Northwest-based running relay team composed entirely of local moms. Bringing together a diverse mix of seasoned marathoners and first-time relay runners, the team needed a bold visual identity that celebrated their collective strength, regional roots, and the beautiful madness of balancing motherhood and athletic endurance.
Role: Lead Graphic Designer
Deliverables: Brand Identity, Custom Typography, Apparel Design (T-shirts), Merchandise (Temporary Tattoos)
Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator
Time frame: 2 weeks, June 2026
The Challenge
The project required a brand identity that felt simultaneously powerful, fun, and deeply meaningful to the team members. The logo needed to balance two distinct themes: the concept of powerful matriarchy and the chaotic energy of a multi-generational running team. Practically, the final design had to be highly versatile—scalable enough to look crisp on a custom-printed running shirt and detailed enough to stand out as a temporary tattoo.
The Strategy & Concept
To capture the true spirit of the team, the visual strategy anchored itself on three core pillars:
The Matriarch (The Orca): The team chose the apex predator of the Pacific Northwest not just for its regional ties, but because orca pods are fiercely led by matriarchs. This served as the perfect symbol for a team of moms.
The "Chaos": To represent the blending of experienced and novice runners navigating a grueling relay, the composition needed movement. A dynamic, cresting wave was introduced to framing the orca, capturing the energy of the PNW coast and the fluid nature of teamwork.
The "Orchestration": The ribbon banners anchor the design, bringing structure to the chaotic energy—literally "orchestrating" the composition just as the team managed their race logistics.
Design Execution
Illustration Style & Color Palette
Dynamic Realism meets Traditional Tattoo Aesthetic: The orca is illustrated mid-breach, bursting through textured waves. Strong, clean black linework ensures the logo remains legible and striking from a distance during a race.
Palette: A refined, Pacific Northwest-inspired palette utilizing deep teals, seafoam greens, and muted cream tones instead of stark white. This gives the brand a classic, rugged, and premium athletic feel.
Custom Typography
Hand-Drawn Texturing: The team name is housed in stylized, flowing banners. A bold, western-leaning slab serif font was customized with a gritty, stippled gradient texture inside the letterforms. This deliberate weathering echoes the grit, stamina, and "chaos" required to crush a long-distance relay.
Real-World Application & Results
The true test of any athletic brand identity is how it performs in the wild. The final vector assets were optimized and deployed across two primary touchpoints:
Team Apparel: Printed on high-performance moisture-wicking running shirts. The cream and deep teal tones offered high visibility on the race course, helping support crews spot their runners instantly.
Swag & Team Spirit: Transformed into custom temporary tattoos worn by the athletes and their support vans. The clean outlines and high-contrast shading ensured the tattoos transferred perfectly and stayed vibrant through miles of sweat and Pacific Northwest weather.
The cohesive branding transformed a group of individual runners into a unified, high-energy pod, turning heads on the course and perfectly capturing the strength of PNW matriarchs in motion.
Key Takeaways
Designing for Community: Creating an identity for a micro-community requires leaning heavily into shared inside jokes and meaningful symbolism (like the orca matriarchy) to build immediate emotional buy-in.
Versatility is King: Ensuring the design used clean vector lines meant it transitioned seamlessly from a large shirt graphic down to a 2x2 inch temporary tattoo without losing its structural integrity.
